Batch 10 students of the MGluxM program at SP Jain School of Global Management visited Sula Vineyards, Nashik, on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. It was an insightful industrial visit where they learnt about the process of winemaking and participated in an incredible wine tasting experience.
Over the last 20 years, Sula has grown and established itself as a pioneer, innovator and leader in the Indian wine industry. From selling their first bottle of wine in 1999 to being the best wine brand in India, they’ve come a long way, and today, their exquisite Sula wines have achieved cult status worldwide.
Saylee, the Sula wine expert, took the students through the process of winemaking:
Picking and sorting
The first step was picking and sorting grapes and moving them to containers for the different wines. They are sorted based on their level of acidity. The students were informed how the grapes are crushed to extract the desired consistency and colour.
Storing
Next, the students were taken to the wine cellar, where the wines were stored in French and American oak barrels. The different kinds of oaks are used to achieve the preferred flavours. The French Oak barrel keeps the wine lighter in taste, whereas the American Oak emits a hard oaky flavour into the wines.
Wine tasting event
The MGLuxM students then experienced the wine tasting event. They were introduced to 6 new wines - a Sparkling wine, a Chardonnay, a Rosé, a Shiraz, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a dessert wine. Saylee took them through when and how should one pair these wines with other foods and meat.
The event ended with a Q&A, where the excited students got an opportunity to ask any questions about the winemaking industry. It was a fun-filled visit as they got a first-hand experience of the luxurious wine industry.
